Agile Ninja Black Belt

You've come a long way since you were a young grasshopper, but you're not an Agile Ninja yet.

All that stands between you and your black belt are these four tasks:

  • Configure the Filter
  • Configure Card Colors
  • Setup Quick Filters
  • Edit Card Fields

Configure the Filter

A board in GreenHopper shows all issues that are present in a filter. When we initially set up the board GreenHopper brought in all of the issues in the JIRA project associated with the board. However, that might not always be the case.

If you want to edit the filter and limit the issues displayed on the board, perhaps by issue type or assignees, you can change the filter as follows:

  1. Click 'Tools' in the top right corner of any board then select 'Configure' from the dropdown
  2. Switch to the 'Filter' tab and click 'Edit Filter'
  3. Here you can change its name, add a description, or share it with people. If you want to edit the actual query, click 'Edit' in the top left corner
  4. Make changes to the JQL, run the query, click 'Save' in the left sidebar, and click 'Save' on the next page as well

Configure Card Colors

Card colors make it easy to identify cards at a glance. You can configure them to denote different issue types, priorities, assignees, and more!

  1. Click 'Tools' in the top right corner of any of the boards then select 'Configure' from the dropdown
  2. Switch to the 'Card Colors' tab where there should be some existing card colors
  3. Select what you want to base the colors on from the dropdown; GreenHopper will automatically create colors for every issue type, priority, and assignee present on your board
  4. You can change the colors by clicking the color swatches
  5. If you want to get really advanced, you can setup your card colors based on JQL queries

Setup Quick Filters

Boards come with two preconfigured Quick Filters: Only My Issues and Recently Updated. Clicking either of these will limit the issues that appear on the board to those that match the filter.

Like the board Filter we looked at above you can also customize the Quick Filters to meet the teams needs:

  1. Click 'Tools' in the top right corner of any board then select 'Configure' from the dropdown
  2. Switch to the 'Quick Filters' tab
  3. Name the Quick Filter and specify the JQL (you might want to test the query in the Issue Navigator before you implement it here); the description is optional

Configure Detail View

When you click on an Issue Key while on the Plan or Work boards, GreenHopper displays the issue details on the right side of the screen. If your instance has custom fields, you'll probably want these fields to appear. This is how you do it:

  1. Click 'Tools' in the top right corner of any board then select 'Configure' from the dropdown
  2. Switch to the 'Issue Detail View' tab
  3. Select the field you want to add to the view then click 'Add'
  4. If you've added multiple fields you can drag them into the preferred order
