You've made it through the first stage of training. Now we're going to turn it up a notch and get into more of the powerful features available to all JIRA users.
To receive your Yellow Belt, you must first learn how to:
- Perform an Advanced Search
- Save and Share a Filter
- Subscribe to a Filter
- Add Search Results Directly to your Dashboard
Perform an Advanced Search
One of the most powerful features of JIRA is its advanced search functionality. Once you populate your demo instance with some issues, you can try using the JIRA Query Language to locate them.
How to do it:
- Click on the 'Issues' link in the top navigation bar.
- Select the 'Search for Issues' option.
- If there is a link for 'Switch to advanced,' click it.
- Enter your query in the text field then press enter.
See the docs for more information on advanced search.
This video should help you get the feel for it. Note: your JIRA instance may have a different UI, but the search syntax hasn't changed:
Save and Share a Filter
If you want to share search results with your team, you need to save the query as a filter.
How to do it:
- After running the query you'd like to share, click the 'Save as' button.
- Enter a name for your filter.
- Click the info icon next to the Save button then click 'Edit permissions'. Choose who you would like to share the filter with and click 'Add' to apply your sharing preferences then save the filter.
If you want to learn more, check out the documentation.
Subscribe to a Filter
Have a saved filter that you check first thing every morning? You can subscribe to it and get the results emailed to you daily, or on whatever schedule you'd prefer.
How to do it:
- Find your saved filter:
- Select 'Manage Filters' from the 'Issues' dropdown menu in the top navigation bar.
- Using the tabs on the left, you may browse your favourite filters, filters created by you, or popular filters, or search for it by name.
- When you locate the filter you'd like to subscribe to, click the 'Subscribe' link to the right of the page.
- Select the recipients for the subscription (if you have permission to do so).
- If you would like to receive the results email even if there are no results, check the 'Email zero results' box.
- Schedule your subscription using the scheduling templates included, or select 'Advanced' to schedule with a cron expression.
- Click 'Subscribe'
For more information on subscribing to a filter, see the documentation.
Add Search Results Directly to your Dashboard
Any filter results you view can be added directly to your personalized dashboard as a chart or a list of issues. If you haven't yet created a dashboard for yourself, this tip will show you how to do so.
How to do it:
- From the issue results in the Issue Navigator, open the 'Views' dropdown menu at the top-right of the screen and select 'On Dashboard.'
- Select the type of gadget you'd like to add to your dashboard from the list on the left of the dialog, then click 'Save to Dashboard.'
- Select which dashboard you'd like to place the gadget on (if you haven't yet created a dashboard, one will be automatically created for you).
- If you have not yet saved the filter, provide a name for it.
- Click 'Save.' You will be taken to the dashboard where the gadget was added.
